Rare Yarn in New York
December 10th, 2008
I’ve knit a simple and fun scarf with some yarn that I have a hard time getting my hands on.
This is made with Fancy Fur, and the pattern, printed on the yarn’s ball band, is both simple and wrong. Cast on 8 stitches and work in stockinette until you’re out of yarn. This actually gives you half a scarf. You need two ball and two hours of knitting to finish this one ball one hour scarf. It’s surprisingly warm, and it’s going to someone who would look really cute in a fun, colorful scarf like this.
This kind of knitting is a rare treat for me. I buy yarn in Manhattan, and because real estate is expensive here, they only carry the high end yarns. They wouldn’t survive selling the cheaper yarn. I can get my hands on cashmere and yak fairly easily, but Lion’s Brand, not so much. It’s always fun to play with the novelty stuff once in a while.

How interesting that you can’t get a hold of this type of yarn. It’s all I can seem to find around here! (small town in Georgia)
I’d love to find something exotic like yak. (The most “exotic” I can find around here is alpaca).
In fact, “Dollar Tree” in my town has a huge bin of this stuff (Lion Brand Fancy Fur) for a dollar a ball right now. I bought a few balls of it, but I’ve never had much luck making this stuff look right (in crochet). I mostly just use it as a trim (single crocheted to the top or edges of stuff).
